Let’s just say Banks is not the stereotypical preacher type guy!
His varied life experiences have given him the ability to see and call out light from dark in a direct way. And then, with a true gift for preaching, he relates those things to how we can bring the Kingdom of God to bear in our families and world.
He grew up in middle Georgia as the son of a Pharmacist father and decorator mother and went on to earn a Building Science degree from Auburn University (War Eagle!). He was in the industry for many years as a project manager building hospitals, malls and offices.
Then came the skydiving years! Banks owned a drop zone in Warm Springs, Georgia where he was the chief instructor, teaching students how to jump out of perfectly good airplanes.
In was in this environment that the Lord called him to be a preacher. Earning a Master of Divinity from Emory’s Candler School of Theology, he has been seeking and preaching the Lord ever since.
It is not uncommon for him to talk about the things and situations he is dealing with in his own life as he walks out the same struggles as everyone else. Ministers are not immune to struggle and frankly, it is quite refreshing to have a preacher who talks about real life and then sets a path forward not just for others, but for himself as well.
One of his nicknames is “The Crybaby Preacher,” given to him by congregations who know him to be moved by what God is doing and to be real during a sermon.
He is married to Kendra, a Nebraska Cornhusker (Go Big Red!) and they have three sons – Eric, a project engineer in Orlando; Michael, a financial technology advisor and Georgia Tech Professional MBA student; and Daniel, who is preparing to join Cherokee County Schools as a teacher and lacrosse coach. Banks and Kendra are also blessed with three wonderful daughter-in-laws!
Oh, and one other thing. He loves to fish! And hunt. Most likely, you will encounter an outdoor story or two, so be ready for it!
